9 Another movie I went into not knowing what to expect (which is actually my favorite way to do it, because if you don't have expectations then you can't be very disappointed), and came out of pleasantly surprised."9" was a very creative and thought-invoking world full of interesting and frightening beasts - it's rightly rated PG-13 just for the creepy creatures. You enter into the movie without any idea of what sort of world you're getting into, but you quickly find out that it's a desolate and scary place for the main characters. The way the plot unfolds was reminiscent of something from a short sci-fi story (but this could be due to the fact that I just finished reading a collection of them by Philip K. Dick), throwing you into the mix while you're trying to figure out what the rules are. It hosts a fairly interesting character lineup - my favorite of course being the spacey, insightful artist - an intriguing story, and a vast environment of interesting rubble. Plus, there's even a scene with Judy Garland's "Over the Rainbow." If the prospect of an animated, spooky, post-apocalyptic sci-fi mystery sounds appealing, then I recommend checking out "9." Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatballs This is one of my new favorite movies.I went in not knowing what to expect. I figured it would be mildly amusing, or possibly very lame, but I was completely blown away; the story, the writing, the character design/development, the animation, the humor (I can't remember the last time I laughed so hard in a theater) were all phenomenal! It's been so long since I've seen a good animated movie that was actually a CARTOON - squash and stretch, sight gags, silliness - yet not stupid or childish. It had a lot of jokes that were multi-leveled, yet it wasn't full of innuendos (like Shrek). It was clean AND hilarious, with a wonderful cast of interesting and assorted characters. Movies don't go onto my "favorites" list lightly. There is a lot of criteria that has to be met, and "Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatballs" blew away all my expectations. I give it a whole-hearted 5 stars. If you like cartoons, go see it. |
